Sometimes the best family vacations don’t require a flight, passports, or months of planning. Sometimes all you need is a few days away, a beautiful lake, and quality time together.
Recently, our family packed up and headed to Chandler, Texas, for a four-night getaway on Lake Palestine. Less than two hours from much of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, it turned out to be one of our favorite family trips in recent memory.

Where We Stayed: Lake Haven on Lake Palestine
We stayed at Lake Haven, a stunning lakefront home that immediately felt like a private retreat.
Situated on more than an acre overlooking Lake Palestine, the property offers breathtaking views from nearly every room. The backyard features an incredible pool that appears to blend directly into the lake beyond, creating an infinity-pool effect that quickly became a favorite gathering spot.
One of the first things we noticed was the wall of windows across the back of the home. Whether we were eating breakfast, relaxing in the living room, or simply walking through the house, we always had a picturesque view of the pool and the lake.
The primary bedroom was equally impressive, featuring a massive window overlooking the water. Waking up each morning to the sunrise over the lake was a vacation experience all by itself.
For families, the kitchen setup was especially convenient. With two refrigerators and a separate freezer, there was plenty of room for groceries, drinks, snacks, and meals for the entire family. We ordered groceries before arriving and ended up eating every meal at the house, which made the trip even more relaxing.
Day One: Pontoon Boat Adventures

Just 1.5 miles down the road from the house is Flat Creek Marina, making it easy to get out on the water.
Friday was dedicated to helping some of our family members become comfortable tubing. We spent the day cruising Lake Palestine on a pontoon boat, enjoying the sunshine and introducing the kids to their first tubing experience.
While the adults enjoyed the scenery, the kids couldn’t wait to jump back in the water and ride again.
Day Two: Speed Boats and Bigger Adventures

After gaining confidence on the water Friday, Saturday was all about stepping things up.
We rented a high-performance boat through Captain Ray’s Boating Adventures using the Boatsetter app, and it quickly became one of the highlights of the trip.
The faster boat meant bigger tubing runs, more excitement, and plenty of laughs. Watching the kids gain confidence and push themselves a little further each run was one of those memorable family moments we’ll talk about for years.
Lake Palestine provided the perfect setting for a full day of adventure on the water.
Fishing Success on Lake Palestine
While part of the family focused on tubing, our older boys were up before sunrise for a guided fishing trip.
Their half-day charter ran from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and they came back with great stories and an even better experience. They spoke highly of the guide and enjoyed learning more about fishing Lake Palestine from someone who knows the lake inside and out, Baxter’s Fishing Guide.
For families with teens who love fishing, a guided charter is an excellent addition to a Lake Palestine vacation.
The Perfect Lazy Sunday
After two days packed with boating, tubing, fishing, swimming, and sunshine, Sunday became our recovery day.
The teenagers slept in.
Nobody was in a hurry.
We enjoyed a slow lunch, spent more time swimming in the pool, played board games together, and simply enjoyed being together without a schedule.
Those unplanned moments often become the most memorable part of a family vacation.

S’mores by the Lake
Our final evening may have been the best part of the entire trip.
Lake Haven features a fire pit area right beside the water with comfortable chairs positioned perfectly for taking in the lake views.
As darkness settled over the lake, we built a fire, made plenty of s’mores, and used color-changing fire packets that turned the flames brilliant shades of blue, green, and purple.
With the gentle sound of the lake nearby, comfortable chairs around the fire, and almost complete darkness surrounding us, it felt peaceful, relaxing, and unforgettable.
It was the perfect way to end a family getaway.
